Christian Careers Day: Working for the Boss
1 May 2023

#CCD2023 #ChristianCareersDay #WorkingforJesus #WorkingfortheBoss
  • Intro

The Bible's expectations for every Christian with regards to our submission to authority is pretty clear - Ephesians 6.5 for instance commands obedience of Christian slaves to their 'earthly masters' in Christ. But what does this look like in the modern context, especially given that we are no longer slaves? At the same time, some Christians seem to be a little confused about work when they work to please their bosses all the way through Sunday, 'neglecting to meet together' (Heb. 10.25f) with their church. The days of famed heroes of the faith like Eric Liddell, who gave up on an Olympic gold medal opportunity so he could be at church, seem to be over.

Clearly, Christians making big decisions about work (that will lead to habit-forming patterns in life) need to be gripped by the Gospel to be working for Jesus when they are at their jobs. What will we say when asked about our priorities in the job interview? Have we properly studied the industry and its effects on our Christian life as we choose the subjects of study that would qualify us for it? Christian Careers Day is here to help us think theologically and practically about the life we are meant to live as we Work for the Boss.

"No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money." - Luke 16:13

    Mr. Jerome Leng

    Jerome Leng

As a young man, Jerome Leng started his university days at the International Medical University (IMU) with ambitious dreams of becoming a doctor to help those in need. However, when he discovered what the gospel demanded of his life, his life changed forever. He gave up his pursuit of becoming a doctor and decided to pursue full-time paid ministry.

Jerome took on a Ministry Training Strategy program and then went on to seminary. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Divinity in Biblical and Theological Studies from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, USA. He was also the recipient of the seminary’s prestigious Clyde T. Francisco Preaching Award in 2018.

He returned to Malaysia in December 2019 to be a minister of God in his homeland and is now a Pastor-in-Training as well as the youth pastor of a local church. Jerome is happily married to Robyn and they have a son, Emmett.

    Mr. Jeremy Wee

    Jeremy Wee

    • Management Consultant, Accenture, Malaysia (2019 - 2022)
    • Consulting Analyst, Accenture, Malaysia (2018 - 2019)
    • Volunteer, Union Gospel Mission, Canada (2016 - 2017)
    • Client Relations, Mackenzie Investments, Canada (2015 - 2017)
    • Sales Associate, Toys R Us, Canada (2015)
    • Tree Planter, Nata Reforestation, Canada (2014)
    • Camp Counsellor, Stillwood Camp & Conference Center (2013)
    • Bachelor in Business Administration, Trinity Western University
    • Passed Canadian Securities Course
    • Chartered Financial Analyst – Completed Level I

Jeremy had high hopes after graduating in Canada but his first job was a Sales Associate in Toys R Us! However, that experience recalibrated his brain and warned him about his ungodly expectations for work. He subsequently worked for 2 years in a large investment firm in Canada and then returned to Malaysia and spent the next 4 years as a Management Consultant in a large professional services company.

His role as a Management Consultant has allowed him to work with many different leaders in large companies across Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand. He thinks that although the travelling is fun, the novelty wears off after a while and it in fact becomes very tiring.

Although he has worked with many different bosses, he has always rooted himself in knowing that he worked for THE boss himself, Jesus Christ. As the second speaker in CCD 2023, he hopes to help you navigate the tough realities of work as a Christian.
